Chapter 17

It was just after dinner and Mason and Liana had toured most of Winter’s End: the red-lit basement labs — they were called labs here — where fellow necromancers were toiling away on new and old spells alike, though some doors had been locked (“For safety,” a stranger had informed them); the main floor great room and its even greater wood-burning fireplace, where they had unfurled like cats on the mantel’s stone bench; the kitchen for snacks; the dining room for dinner; they’d even tried their less-than-skilled hands at croquet in the backyard before evening set in.

Amazingly, Winter’s End’s weird ecosystem darkened with each passing hour. It was an imperfect forgery of night, absent of stars, a neutered sun looming over the horizon like a second moon.

Presently, Liana was showing Mason the room she was staying in, which looked a lot like the room he was staying in, only hers was on the second story, next to Eli’s apparently.

“Speaking of which, I expected to see Eli at dinner.” Mason was sucking on a lime candy he’d grabbed from a dish downstairs. “Where is he, anyway? I haven’t seen him, not since before I passed out yesterday.”

“Endless amounts of work to do: that’s what he told me this morning,” said Liana. “I think he’s literally locked himself in one of those private labs downstairs.”

Well, that’s… suspicious, thought Mason, who was suddenly reminded of the chain of events that had led him to this moment, of the mission he’d grudgingly accepted from Joan to look into a suspicious man named Eli Abelman who maybe had plans to do… something. That was where Mason was supposed to come in: find out, report back.

Liana shrugged. “He said he’d show us in a few days, his magnum opus — for real, I caught him calling it that once. I know he’s a bit cagey, but that’s just the way Eli is, trust me, especially when he’s stressed. He wants things to be perfect before he lets them out into the world.”

“So, you have no idea what it is?” asked Mason. “This project of his.”

“Your guess is as good as mine.”

Probably better, actually. Mason shrugged it off, doing his best I don’t care. He pushed himself off her mattress and onto his feet. “Where to now?”

Liana was still sitting. “Hmm. Well, we’ve explored the basement, the main floor, and the grounds. I guess that just leaves this floor, but I think it’s just bedrooms up here. Whatever. We’ll find something interesting. I bet this old building is full of interesting secrets, interesting stories. Come on.” The mattress squeaked as she bounced to her feet, quicker than Mason knew how. “Let’s explore.”

It was, alas, mostly bedrooms. But Liana was intent on adventure, and she found her magical wardrobe in the form of an attic door, partially veiled by a bookcase at the end of a quiet hallway of bedrooms. “Look.” She pointed.

“An attic. So?”

“You know what they say about attics.”

“I don’t, actually.”

“They’re full of secrets. What’s that saying: skeletons in the attic or whatever?”

“It’s closet.
